According to the specialised websites I visited, the average salary for an HR manager in the UK is an impressive £75,136. Switzerland is Europe's only country with a higher average wage. France comes in second and Sweden comes in third, with £73,273 and £67,332 respectively. Despite the higher wages, you would work an extra two hours per week and have eight fewer days of annual leave in France. If your main goal is to have a large income that provides the best financial opportunities on the European continent in the field of human resources, these European countries are the best option for you.
According to several studies on the subject, Portugal, Cyprus, Spain, or the Netherlands are the best places to find a proper work-life balance. Working 35 hours per week (five hours less than the European average) and having 25 days of paid leave provides the best work-life balance. Portugal ranks last in the study, with an average salary of £40,673, 47% less than the UK (£35,000). However, the financial benefits of countries such as the United Kingdom and Switzerland are greatly diminished when your priority is to have more free time than if you worked in countries with greater financial gains and opportunities.
TotallyMoney.com has conducted extensive research on European salaries and working hours. It developed a useful interactive tool that allows you to select your profession and compare the benefits and drawbacks of working in each country. HR professionals should relocate to Sweden, where managers earn an average of more than £64,000 per year. According to the study's findings, the United Kingdom is the best place to work for accountant and payroll positions. People expect a good salary but are let down by the workload and hostile work environment. The Netherlands, according to the same report, has the highest average pay (£39k annually), the fewest hours worked per week (26), and one of the lowest cost of living rates. Researchers found that 55% of Britons believe they are underpaid, while a third believe they are overworked. However, for some people, the extra cash may be too alluring to refuse.
According to other studies, the salary of a human resources manager is the highest in the United States, with salaries in the United Kingdom and Canada being very close. This is most likely due to the country's larger population and increased demand for HR professionals. Hourly wages were reported by some sources rather than yearly average HR salaries. Human resources assistant salaries are listed as hourly wages in the United States and Canada. The highest pay for this position is in the United States, followed by Canada and the United Kingdom.
If your goal is to scale rapidly and acquire new responsibilities and increase your annual revenue, according to several specialised websites, the best place to work is North America. Since within companies they give the opportunity to employees to scale and advance in their professional lives by implementing some training programs and valuing the employees that have a deep knowledge of the company, since in the United States and Canada, companies have an internal competitive system, meaning that companies give the opportunity to employees that have considerable experience in a particular field, these companies prioritise such candidates rather than those that have little experience and a lot of certifications and licences.
I tried to present some arguments for why you should consider working in countries with high financial potential as well as countries where you can develop your skills and competencies. What about the most appealing countries for having a pleasant and enlightening social life? According to some studies, having a social life increases employee engagement. Employee engagement reflects corporate culture, and happy workers are more likely to be brand ambassadors. Europe has the lowest rate of engagement (58%), followed by Vietnam, Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, and Canada. In 2017, only Latin America and Africa saw an increase in engagement rates. This phenomenon could be explained by two factors: the work culture of countries with high levels of job satisfaction, and the cultural activities that employees participate in while living in those countries.
Finally, this is a personal decision that you and your future HR and professional science must make. We all have unique needs, desires, and expectations. However, my advice would be to consider the three factors I discussed in this article: salary expectations, career advancement, and a pleasant living and working culture in the country where you want to work.
